Vatican Radio celebrates its 80th anniversary with Guglielmo Marconi’s daughter

Important manoeuvres are being made within the Catholic publishing sector.

The new director of the Italian bi weekly magazine “La Civiltà Cattolica” has taken his post, while the “Christian Family’s” editorial framework is being reinforced

Elettra Marconi, the daughter of the man who invented radio, Guglielmo Marconi was also present at the mass celebrated in the Vatican Gardens this morning by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone.

The mass was held in celebration of the patron saint of Vatican Radio, on the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel, and in the year in which the Vatican broadcaster celebrated the 80th anniversary of its founding.

Bertone recalled that the “far-sighted wisdom” of the Vatican Radio’s foundation which Pius XI and Marconi agreed on 80 years ago, underlining that the way of fulfilling the purposes for which it was established may have changed, the essence of the Pope’s Radio station has not: “Vatican Radio therefore needs to carry on being a typically ecclesiastical means of communication, that is, it needs to be linked to the Church in an active way, in the same way as a vine is entwined around a trellis.”

According to the Secretary of State, “it is not just about acting as a sound board for whatever the Pope does or says, but also about communicating faithfully, the truth preached by the Church, especially in relation to faith and morality, in the same authentic way that these are interpreted and preached by the Church’s Teachings.”

According to Bertone, the new challenges presented by digital innovation, require Vatican Radio to join the multimedia world in a decisive and courageous way and, following the logic of a greater sharing of content, develop new collaborations, for example, with the Apostolic See’s communication institutions.” After the mass, Bertone awarded papal honours to six employees, “for their service to the Pope and to the Church.”

There have recently been some important events in the Catholic publishing world. Antonio Spadaro has officially taken up his post as Director of the “La Civiltà Cattolica” magazine and there are some changes ahead for the “Christian Family” and the San Paolo publishing group.

This Catholic weekly will have a new co-director, Father Antonio Rizzolo, who will be leading the magazine alongside Father Antonio Sciortino who has been directing it since 1999. The co-director is vice President of FISC, the Italian Federation of Catholic Weekly Magazine and will remain director of the weekly newspaper “Gazzetta d’Alba”.

The editorial chiefs of the “Christian Family” magazine have been strengthened by the appointment of Maurizio de Paoli as deputy director, who up until now has been central news editor of the weekly publication, who will work alongside Fulvio Scaglione who has been deputy director since 2000.
