Vatican: no decision on diplomatic recognition of Kosovo

On February 10, the Vatican announced the appointment of an apostolic delegate to Kosovo - but cautioned that the appointment should not be taken as a sign of diplomatic recognition.

Archbishop Juliusz Janusz was named by Pope Benedict XVI as apostolic nuncio to Slovenia, with the added responsibility of acting as apostolic delegate to Kosovo.

But in a statement accompanying the announcement, the Vatican press office stressed that the appointment in Kosovo “has a purely intra-ecclesial character, being completely completely distinct from considerations regarding juridical and territorial situations or any other question inherent to the diplomatic activity of the Holy See.”
