Priest facing indecent assault charges in Cork

A retired priest has appeared at Mallow District Court charged with indecently assaulting two teenage girls in the town in the early 1980s.

Father Dan Duane, of the Presbytery, Cecilstown, Mallow, Co Cork, is alleged to have assaulted the girls while serving as a priest in Diocese of Cloyne.

Detective Garda Colman Murphy of Mallow Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that Father Duane replied 'no' when the two charges were put to him.

There was no garda objection to bail.

Inspector Senan Ryan said Fr Duane had been aware of the garda investigation for some time and had remained in north Cork throughout this time.

Judge Michael Pattwell remanded Fr Duane on his own bail of €500 until 5 April for service of the book of evidence.
