Plan to allow Catholic monarch for UK put on hold

Reforms to allow Catholics to take the throne in Great Britain were put on hold by Secretary of State William Hague.

Quizzed over progress on reforms to the Act of Succession that would end the ban, he told MPs it was not a priority.

Labour began discussions about the changes and former foreign office minister Chris Bryant pressed Mr Hague on the matter.

But with terrorism, problems in Egypt and the situation in Afghanistan, Mr Hague said it is “not yet at the top of my list”.

He did concede, however, that it was a legitimate issue.
