I will not and cannot do gay weddings, says Father Bob

"Spread the word, comrades. I will not do gay weddings. I cannot do gay weddings. The H/S headliner is wrong," tweeted Father Bob Maguire in response to a news report headline this week, said The Age.

In true Father Maguire fashion, the South Melbourne character who has earned the title ''celebrity priest'', if there is such a thing, said he had an idea for the paper to correct the wrong: ''I hope the editor of the Herald Sun will make a sizeable donation to the Father Bob Foundation.''

He made the remarks at the golden jubilee dinner Tuesday celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination.

The event raised funds for the Father Bob Maguire Foundation to provide scholarships for disadvantaged children.

It was hosted by Eddie McGuire and attended by 600 people, including philanthropist Jeanne Pratt, media-buying magnate Harold Mitchell and comedian John Blackman, who moderated the ''Father Bob roast'' by Denise Drysdale, Angry Anderson and Les Twentyman.
