We are failing as Stewards of Creation - Archbishop Clifford

Archbishop Dermot Clifford has said that we are heading for an environmental catastrophe if we do not take responsibility as stewards of creation and make positive changes to our lifestyles.

Speaking in advance of the publication of the Irish bishops' pastoral reflection on the environment 'The Cry of the Earth' on November 10, Archbishop Clifford called on people to look at how they can play their part to protect the environment by making simple changes to save energy, conserve water and recycle waste.

Plays a part

''We hope that the pastoral reflection will give people an understanding that everyone plays a part, every Christian will see his or her duty to make small changes in their lifestyle, and that added together they could make big changes in the world.''

He said the main message of the pastoral reflection is that each individual is a steward of God's creation, and that we are responsible for the condition of the planet we hand onto the next generation.

''We are stewards but that does not give us absolute freedom to do what we like, and we have been abusing the gifts of nature. We must respect and care for the environment, and keep it for the next generation.''
