Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese to make major announcement

The Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese plans to make what is being called "an historic announcement" on Saturday morning.

Bishop John D'Arcy confirmed for WSBT Radio the announcement does involve the appointment of a new bishop. He said the new bishop is currently serving in another diocese.

An e-mail sent out by the Diocese said the announcement would be something "that takes place once in a generation." Bishop John D'Arcy will be in attendance.

Bishop D'Arcy was announced as the successor to Bishop William McManus in February of 1985. He was officially installed as the Bishop of the Diocese on May 1, 1985. He was ordained to the priesthood in Boston in 1952.

Bishop D'Arcy made national headlines earlier this year when he announced he would not attend graduation ceremonies at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend where President Obama, who supports a woman's right to abortion, had been invited to be the keynote speaker.

"For me to attend could say to the young people 'That's ok'. For a Catholic, it's not ok," said D'Arcy, of President Obama's stances on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

Bishop D'Arcy has also been very critical of the way the Catholic Church handled the priest sex abuse scandal.

The announcement is set to take place 10:15 a.m. at the Archbishop Noll Catholic Center located at 915 S. Clinton Street in Fort Wayne.

That announcement will be followed by a similar one in South Bend at 2:15 p.m.
